Florida kitchens fight a quiet war: steamy summers, year-round air conditioning, and salt in the air within miles of the Gulf. Materials that perform for decades in Denver can fail here in five years. Here’s what holds up — and what doesn’t.
Plywood boxes outlast particleboard in humidity — full stop. Thermofoil doors peel near dishwashers and ranges when the heat-humidity cycle wins; painted solid wood and quality MDF cores hold up far better. If your cabinets’ doors are delaminating but the boxes are sound, refacing with moisture-resistant fronts is the move.
Quartz never needs sealing and doesn’t care about humidity — it’s the dominant Pinellas spec for a reason. Granite performs with an annual seal. Butcher block can work but must be sealed on all sides, top and bottom, or the Gulf climate will cup it within a season or two.
Near the water, bargain hinges and pulls corrode visibly in a few seasons. Stainless and quality plated finishes survive; bargain-bin options don’t. It’s a small line in the budget and a real one — a pro who works near the beach specs for it automatically.
Porcelain tile and LVP handle slab moisture and wet feet; engineered wood works where solid hardwood doesn’t. The slab itself gets moisture-tested before anything goes down — in this climate, that step is not optional.
